Day 1 Agenda

Workshops 7th September: Clinical management of concussion

Format:

This full day workshop will involve a comprehensive overview of concussion with interactive components in regards to clinical management across the injury to recovery journey.

The day will include:
- Lecture with all attendees
- Multiple 1.5 hour workshops addressing different stages of concussion assessment and management. 3 of the 5 workshops will be repeated.
- Closing panel

 

Lecture (Melbourne University Med Lecture Theatre):

The lecture will cover an essential overview of all aspects of concussion. The information delivered will be essential for clinicians working in any aspect of the concussion journey.

The lecture will touch on areas of concussion assessment and management but the workshops will provide an opportunity to do a deeper dive into these.

Topics covered will include:
- Pathophysiology
- Definition
- Guidelines / Recognition
- Sub assessment
- Normal recovery
- Persisting post-concussion symptoms (pPCS)
- Management of pPCS
- Long-term considerations / Retirement

Workshop 1:

Acute pitch assessment 1.5 hours (Melbourne University Physiotherapy Practical Lab Room)

(Repeated Morning & Afternoon)

This workshop is geared towards clinicians working on game day. There will be consideration and comparison between different sports and codes.

Included will be:
- On pitch assessment and sideline assessment
- Use of the CRT / SCAT as recommended by the CISG

Workshop 2:

Sub-acute assessment - 1.5 hours (Melbourne University Physiotherapy Practical Lab Room)

This workshop will address sub-acute medical assessments of the person and the identification of persisting symptoms.

Included will be:
- Office based assessment – SCOAT6 & Child SCOAT6

Workshop 3:

Rehabilitation - 1.5 hours (Melbourne University Physiotherapy Practical Lab Room)

(Repeated Morning & Afternoon)

This workshop will be an introduction to rehabilitation principals, working within a multidisciplinary team and a graded return to play.

Included will be:
- Practical explanation of working within an MDT
- Visual and vestibular rehabilitation
- Cervical rehabilitation
- Education and Psychological intervention

Workshop 4:

Prevention – 1.5 hours  (Melbourne University Physiotherapy Practical Lab Room)

(Repeated Morning & Afternoon)

This workshop will cover prevention of concussion across different sporting codes.

Included will be:
- Female Athlete Injury pRevention (FAIR)
- Neuromuscular warm up
- Other prevention measures

Workshop 5:

Management of chronic symptoms – 1.5 hours  (Melbourne University Physiotherapy Practical Lab Room)

This workshop will focus on medical, physical and psychological management for patients with chronic ongoing symptoms.

Included will be:
- Management of somatization
- Psychological interventions
- Management of migraines

Workshop 6:

Return to Play – 1.5 hours  (Melbourne University Physiotherapy Practical Lab Room)

(Repeated Morning & Afternoon)

This workshop will consist of the considerations for the safe return to play

Included will be:
- Autonomic recovery
- Graded return activities within the early recovery
- Return to play after rehabilitation

Closing panel: 1 hour (Melbourne University Med Lecture Theatre)

To close we will bring the group back together in a panel format with 4-5 experts and raise questions and discussion points to the group which came up during the day.
